Plunkitt of Tammany Hall Essay ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s an honest graft and, Iââ¬â¢m an example of how it worksâ⬠¦Iââ¬â¢ve seen my opportunities and I took ââ¬Ëemâ⬠(3). An excerpt that defines the confident and political leader: George Washington Plunkitt. As a brilliant and successful businessman Plunkitt managed to use his method of machine politics to win the heart and commitment of people and political power. In the novel Plunkitt of Tammany Hall, author William L. Riordon, Plunkittââ¬â¢s political reporter who records the many lectures Plunkitt presented at Tammany Hall. The book emphasizes on Plunkittââ¬â¢s advocacy for political control and the political machine that helped him gain wealth and a political seat in Tammany Hall. In novel, Plunkitt defends the political machine by explaining the difference between ââ¬Å"honest graftâ⬠and ââ¬Å"dishonest graftâ⬠. Many accused the political leaders of Tammany Hall of gaining wealth from graft. Plunkitt describes the difference between the two terms. He describes ââ¬Å"dishonest graftâ⬠as ââ¬Å"blackmailinââ¬â¢ gamblers, saloonkeepers, and disorderly peopleâ⬠(3). In other words, the corruption of gaining political or business power used from bribery. Plunkittââ¬â¢s term for ââ¬Å"honest graftâ⬠has to do with the example of purchasing and selling off land for business projects. For example, if the town begins discussing a specific piece of land to be used for a community park, Plunkitt would buy that piece of land, inflate the price, and sell the property to the project developer. Plunkitt finds his way of profiting ââ¬Å"honestâ⬠; I call this taking advantage of ones political power. As an ââ¬Å"honestâ⬠Irish- American Plunkitt knows how to take advantage of the game and he will continue to play it until sand turns into stone. With the ability to win over voterââ¬â¢s hearts and gain political support Plunkitt comfortably knows how to keep a seat in Tammany Hall. One of his, again, ââ¬Å"honestâ⬠tactics, Plunkitt knows how to target specific types of voters. In the chapter ââ¬Å"To Hold Your Districtâ⬠, Plunkett claims how to target the lower class people. He would start house fires so that the poor would not have any clothing or food. Then Plunkitt would act as a friend to the people giving them quarters for clothing and food to win the heart of the people. In other words, he was gaining a vote. Plunkitt would even hand out candy to children to promise to make sure their parents were voting for him in elections. As a corruption to society, Plunkitt knew how fake the political act and win people over with friendships. According to Plunkitt in order to become a politician in Tammany Hall one must know how to bluff. Everything was about winning a vote, whether it was taking someone to a baseba ll game or handing out candy to children. What ever it took. As a business and political man, Plunkitt knew the political game inside and out. With corruption, he managed to continue to remain in office for countless years. Even though Plunkittââ¬â¢s grammar was inferior to a professorsââ¬â¢ or college graduate, it had nothing to do with being a political powerhouse. A politician had to have common sense and know how to gain ones trust, even if it meant dishonesty. By selling himself and taking advantage of political and business opportunities with ââ¬Å"honestâ⬠or ââ¬Å"dishonestâ⬠graft, Plunkitt attentiveness always kept himself in front with wealth and politically.

Why Is Religion Important? :: Why Study Religion?
Why is it important to study the world's religions in the college and university curriculum? Religious Studies is intellectually exciting because it provides access to the mystery of the other. Religion is one of the primary disciplines for investigating the boundary questions of life and death, of love and hate, that characterize the human condition. All persons crave for self-transcendence in one mode or another. Religious Studies provides the opportunity to understand, with depth and nuance, the many beliefs and rituals that move persons to appreciate the alternative world of the religious reality. Religious Studies is academically enriching because it is a transdisciplinary mode of inquiry that engenders deep intercultural literacy. Serious study of the world's religions inculcates unique cultural sensitivities among students. Since it straddles the boundary between objective evidence and subjective experience, religious studies is methodologically diverse, globally aware, and academically transgressive. Religious studies is rigorously and playfully open to a multicultural and international way of being that bursts the boundaries of the conventional and the everyday. Religious Studies is personally meaningful because it raises questions of purpose and value along with developing important life skills. Religious studies enables the development of crucial aptitudes -- critical thinking, communication competence, interpersonal awareness, and intercultural literacy -- necessary for success in a global society. The aim of liberal education -- healthy, holistic education -- is about gaining wisdom, not the accumulation of knowledge as such. Practically speaking, religious studies can enable students to better practice the task of selfhood by both building self-esteem and making possible the acquisition of competencies crucial for one's well-being in increasingly diverse world cultures What role should religion play in the curriculum? To learn about the religious dimensions of world cultures is essential to a fully informed and multicultural educational curriculum. But it should be noted that teaching about religion on a comparative, educational basis is not the same as teaching religion. To teach about religion is to study the religions of the world in a manner that is comparative, factual, and fair-minded, and that avoids any hint of faculty or students trying to persuade other faculty or students to subscribe to this or that religious (or non-religious or anti-religious) belief-system. To teach religion, on the other hand, is a rhetorical exercise that attempts to persuade students to believe (or not) in a particular religion or system of ideas. To teach about religion, then, is

With such a low turnover rate, the first question that comes to mind is ââ¬Å"What makes this company so great? â⬠One important factor may be that the company has several attractive family-friendly benefits. Recently the infant-care center at headquarters was expanded by 43 percent, and the company subsidizes 25 percent of infant care costs. This fact alone would certainly make this company an attractive choice to many family oriented workers. General Mills employs approximately 17,000 workers in the United States. General Mills reports that ââ¬Å"employees who lead healthy, fulfilling lives are more likely to make a strong contribution in the work place. â⬠There are a multitude of factors that support this believe and contribute to the low turnover rate recognized and reported in Fortune. Some of the supporting factors include: generous vacation time, paid holiday, and summer hour benefits. For example, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, headquarter employees are offered an option to work longer days Monday through Thursday and work a half day on Friday. Flexible work schedules and telecommuting when business conditions allow are available. The company also offers paid leave for new fathers and parents who are adopting children. General Mills has received many corporate recognition awards. A few notable recognitions include: Fortuneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Most Admired Companiesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"100 Best Companies to Work for. â⬠General Mills has also received recognition by Working Mother magazine as ââ¬Å"Best Companies for Woman of Color,â⬠Business Week ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Top Giversâ⬠and Business Ethics ââ¬Å"100 Best Corporate Citizens. â⬠Another important note is General Millââ¬â¢s commitment to diversity may also play a major role in retaining employees for a longer period. General Mills published that they see diversity as a strategy rather than a policy. The company believes that his strategy gives them a global advantage as well as a competitive advantage when drafting and marketing products. Their commitment to this strategy is supported by the fact that they aggressively seek minority suppliers to provide the services that make their products possible. As part of this focus, they set minority business entrepreneur purchasing goals. They also develop relationships with national minority organizations and build employee support and development. With this in mind, I think it is clear that this company strives to stay focused on people. They understand reinforcing values that are important to people through happy employees, good brands, innovation and performance, will result in long term commitments from their employees and long term profits from their customers. On May 16, 2007, before the Joint Economic Committee, Scott A. Weisberg, Vice President, Compensation, Benefits, and Staffing for General Mills Incorporated stated, ââ¬Å"we strive to be a ââ¬Å"cradle-to-graveâ⬠employer, which means we hire many of our employees at the entry level and hope they spend their entire career with General Mills. We believe this continuity translates into performance and a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Our benefits package reflects this core philosophy ââ¬â our benefits are imbued with incentives to encourage people to stay. When employees leave, especially long time employees, a significant loss of knowledge and experience leaves with them. The cost to search for and train new people is substantial. According to one employee, it was the benefits and incentives that attracted them to the company and has definitely keep them there (WCCO, 2008). Another employee commented about being more productive because of the on-site conveniences and concierge service (WCCO, 2008). The benefits and incentives offered by General Mills create a workplace that motivates employees intrinsically and extrinsically. These benefits and incentives are designed to help employees achieve a balance between work and home life. The motivational techniques applied by General Mills gives the company the ability to create a flexible, inclusive, and challenging workplace, which in turn drives productivity and innovation. If General Mills has one area in which they can improve, it would be how long employees have to wait for promotions. Low voluntary turnover is a double edged sword. The benefit of retaining employees is the knowledge base, work experience, reduced recruiting and training costs. The consequence is promotions are harder to come by because employees stay in the workforce longer. The risk to General Mills, they may see more voluntary turnover as younger workers decide to move on to companies in which the chance for promotion is more attainable. One approach General Mills could take is asking employees if there is a particular area of the company they are interested in learning. For example, a person in human resources may be interested in learning about strategic planning. The human resources employee is matched to a mentor in the strategic planning department and begins training. Now the human resources employee has the opportunity to promote in either department. As General Mills continues to grow and expand internationally, their strong vision of community partnerships and service will help them adapt to economic and cultural changes. China has had many changes throughout its history. China unlike many other countries had the opportunity to grow with minimal outside interference. Due to this they created unique Chinese philosophy, writing, and government. There are two other countries that China greatly influenced. These countries are Vietnam, Korea, and Japan. China was one of the few countries in the world that grew with minimal interference from its outside neighbors. The reason for this is due to Chinaââ¬â¢s geography. One of the most important and unique items to come from this isolation is Chinaââ¬â¢s writing system. China retained its logographic writing system since there were no other civilizations that came in and changed the way the Chinese wrote during itsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is also the period of Chinese history where three of their greatest philosophies were invented. The philosophies are Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. During the Zhou dynasty the everyday social life changed dramatically. The Zhou dynasty followed and strict hierarchy with the King on top followed by leaders of states and so on. During the warring states period warfare was greatly improved by the cross bow. The cross bow allowed soldiers on foot to shoot further than those mounted with long bows. Another item that came after the cros s bow was the armor. The Chinese soldiers would have to wear armor to help protect themselves from the cross bow. Some of the longest lasting philosophies as well as schools of thought have come from China. Three of the most important Chinese philosophies that came from the warring states period and that are still important are Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. Confucius (551-479 B.C.E.) served in the court of his home state of Lu. After a period of not gaining much influence Confucius left his home with followers and searched around the neighboring states for a leader that would follow his philosophies. His philosophies are mostly ethical rather than metaphysical like most religions. Confuciusââ¬â¢s works were recorded in the Analects by his followers.
